Another season is underway at Val’s Kountry Corral! It is nice to be back and to see “old friends” ….and, of course, to escape the cold winters up north!
A big welcome to those who have chosen our Park for the first time. We hope you will find it to your liking. You will find, when talking to others in the Park, that many have made this their home during the Winter months for many years. That speaks well of the Park. It’s not easy being the “new kid on the block”. We have all been there. It is much easier, however, to get acquainted in a smaller park….and I think you will find this is a very friendly park. Oh, yea….we have a couple of “old grouches” in the park, but every park is bound to have them. Ignore them and they will go away!
Now to all of you who have called this home for many seasons, take a minute and introduce yourself to these newcomers. They may not remember your name right away ….but some of us have that problem with those who have been here for years!
Again, it’s good to be back to our “second” home. Enjoy the Winter! Editor.
POOL MAKE_OVER
While we were gone, the pool got a total
make-over during the summer. The old plaster was removed from the pool and spa
and replaced with new. A salt generator,
which converts salt into chlorine, was installed. The filter was rebuilt, new inlet
and outlet lines were replaced, and an automatic control panel with a remote was installed. The pool should be good for many years to come now.
POOL RESTRICTION
While we are on the pool….some new restrictions are now in force. Only residents of the Park and paying overnight guests are permitted in the pool, due to insurance liability.
TRADE DAYS (formerly Park Wide Yard Sale)
Some changes in our yearly Trade Days are as follows: There will be no more selling items in front of your unit. All items you have to sell must be taken to the front of the Park, where you will be able to set up. Check bulletin board for more information regarding set-up. The date will be Sat. Dec 13, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Please sign up to help!
CHRISTMAS LIGHTING CONTEST
Judging of Christmas lighting will be Friday evening, Dec. 19. Be sure your lights are on that evening. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded on Dec. 20 at the Gift Exchange Party.
PETER PIPER PIZZA
Monday, Dec. 15, 5:00 p.m. All you can eat buffet. $4.98 per person + tax. See bulletin board for more information.
CHRISTMAS GIFT EXCHANGE
This is a fun time! You new people talk to your neighbor who has attended this event or talk to one of the managers and they will tell you how we conduct this gift exchange. Buy a gift costing $10.00 - $15.00, wrap it so it can not be identified. DO NOT put a name tag on it and put it under the tree anytime before Sat., Dec.20, 7:00 p.m., the night of the party. BYOB and finger food to share. Don’t miss this one!!!
PHONE BOOKS
If you need a new phone book, they are on the floor, next to where the American flag is located. Help yourself. Free.
Walking: My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he’s 97 years old and we don’t know where the hell he is.
I love long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
I have to walk early in the morning before my brain figures out what I’m doing.
TRIMMING THE TREE
The Rec Hall looks very nice, thanks to all of you who helped. The tree was finished, as well as the Hall, in about an hour! Lots of sweet “goodies” and eggnog was available.
RAZ-MA-TAZ
If you were not there, you missed a great performance put on by a group of high school students. They have been singing all over the Valley for several years. This was their Christmas program. Now, if you missed this one, they will be back to perform in early February and this program will be songs from Broadway shows.
RULES & REGULATIONS
Every year you are given a sheet with rules and regulations. Folks, these DO change from year to year. So, take a few minutes and read them.
THANKSGIVING DINNER
One of the best we have had! Plenty of turkey and ham, a great selection of the "trimmings" that you would expect, and a big choice of dessert! A big "Thanks" to Marge and Betty and their helpers. A great job, gals. Over 50 attended.
50-50 DRAWING SOON
Mary and I are working on this. Drawing will be December 20 at the Christmas Gift Exchange. Someone on your street will be around to sell you tickets very soon.

PARK WEB PAGE
Just a reminder to everyone….the park web page has a lot of information and pictures that you might find interesting. Your families and friends might also like to see what the Park looks like as well. The web page address is: www.kountry-corral.com
PHOTO ALBUM
The photo album for the 07-08 season is now in the Hall.
PAPER PICK-UP ON ROAD
JOE Cordova would like to thank those who helped pick up trash this month. This is done the first Monday of each Month. Meet at Rec Hall at 8:00 a.m. “Fritters” served upon return!
EXERCISE…..
Every time I hear the dirty word “exercise”, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.
I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years just getting over the hill.
We all get heavier as we get older, because there’s a lot more information in our heads….that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
CHECK BULLETIN BOARD
When you go up to get your mail, take time to look at the bulletin board. This is a busy time of year and new announcements of up-coming events sometimes appear daily. Yes, you have a calendar that shows you what is happening each day. But, sometimes it is necessary to make a change in a notice. This only takes you a couple of minutes to scan the board.
SPEED LIMIT
Contrary to what you may have heard…..the speed limit in the Park is still 5 MPH!! I have noticed some of you have forgotten. You folks who are new this year and live on my street are doing very well.
CHIGGERS
If you are one that these nasty little (only about 0.5 mm in diameter) bugs like to bite, here is a formula for getting rid of them in your yard:
Use a sprayer that attaches to the hose (I use an Ortho sprayer). Fill it 3\4 full of ammonia, finish filling it with vinegar, add a spoonful of sulfur and three or four drops of a soap detergent. (Do not go out and buy any sulfur…I have a 4 lb. bag that I will gladly share with you.)
It is always a good idea to use any repellent containing DEET and pyrethrum before working in the yard. Spray your shoes, socks and pant cuffs.
CHRISTMAS DINNER
Time: 4:00 p.m. Christmas day, Buffet style. See bulletin board for more information and to sign up.
NEW YEARS EVE PARTY
At the time I wrote this, there was still a need for someone to chair this event I hope by the time you read this that has happened!
CAN YOU HELP?
There are two “tubs” in the Rec Hall. One is for the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank, and the other is for children in Mexico.
PARK PHOTO ALBUM
The photo album for 07-08 is in the Rec Hall. I did about 95% of the album this past summer at Mary’s, and made the photo album in scrapbook form. I owe a big “Thanks” to both Kathy Hamilton and Star Weidman. Kathy for sending much needed info to Canada that I needed, and Star for several pictures I needed. One other person that put up with my spreading scrapbook “stuff” all over the computer room at her place in Canada….most of the summer…..thanks Dear.
If there are any pictures in the album that you might like to have reproduced. I can make 4 x 6 size photos of most pictures, or larger if you like.
LIKE SWING ERA MUSIC ?
We discovered a group of musicians last season that play “our” kind of music. I’m referring to the music we listened to in the 40’s and 50’s. The group is made up of musicians, many who have played professionally. It is the same group each week…a tenor sax guy that also plays a mean flute…a clarinet player that doubles on sax; trumpet, trombone, keyboard, a base vile guy that also plays banjo, and a lead guitar player. They play each Monday, 1:30 -3:30 at Countryside Mobile Park. Easy park to find. See me (Reid) for more information.
JAMMIN’ AT JACK’S
Until good weather prevails Jammin’ will be held at Medlins (lot 32) each Saturday, 2 -4 pm. The first Saturday in January they will start playing at the “Palapa” by the pool.
......... ’til next season, Reid & Mary
