January 2008 Newsletter

January 21, 2008
Editor: Reid Brenan

A big “welcome” to all of you who have arrived since our last edition of the Newsletter. I think we can say the Park is as full as it is going to get this season. There could be two or three more residents still to come. Unfortunately, sickness has prevented some from arriving at all this season. To all of you folks that are “first-timers” in our Park, we hope you find the park to your liking and return again next season. It is not too hard to get acquainted in a small park. Hopefully, your neighbors will make it easy for you. However, get involved in things that are happening in the park. This is one of the best ways to get acquainted.

Rules and Regulations

When you arrived, and checked in at the office, you were given a set of Rules and Regulations for the Park. Please take the time to read these. There are some significant changes you need to be aware of. It won’t take you five minutes to look it over. If you don’t have a copy, ask for one at the office.

50/50 Winner

The winner of the last 50/50 drawing, held at the New Years Eve party, was Irene and Art Byykkonen. The amount of tickets sold was $268.00, of which half goes to the winner and half into Activity Fund.

Annual Park Meeting

This year’s meeting had standing room only! The reason, of course, was to find out if the lot rent was going up and if so, how much. Mr. And Mrs. Valentin Cuellar, Park owners, were in attendance. Both spoke briefly to the Park residents.

The new rates were announced. The increase varied, depending on which plan you are on. For those of us who are “six & six” or yearly, the rent went up $150.00. There had not been an increase in rent for three years. During this time 50 amp electrical service has been installed throughout the park, a new well drilled, the palapa built and many other improvements. These items required substantial amounts of money…into the thousands of dollars.

The issue involving the use of money in the Activity Fund going for new front doors on the Rec. Hall, was also discussed. Many felt that the fund should not be used for this purpose. Other ideas for the use of the money were suggested. By now you have received in your mailbox a sheet titled, “Activity Fund Survey”. Three suggestions are mentioned, with several lines to add your own suggestions as to how the money might be used. Please take time to think about this and return the sheet to the office as soon as possible. You do not have to sign it and you can drop it through the mail slot after hours if you like. (News Update: I just learned that over half of you have already turned in the survey sheet! Your input is important and appreciated. Please get them in by Feb. 1 so the results can be tabulated and decisions made.

Christmas Dinner at Rec Hall

To say it went well would be an understatement. Ask anyone of the 70 plus people who attended and I think they would say it went very well. Plenty of good food .. I know, I was there. When it became time for the table where Tom Whittaker was sitting, he got in such a hurry to fill his plate that he took a “nose-dive” into the chairs of the next table and hit the floor! Thank goodness Tom was not injured. I found out later he has a “trick” knee that occasionally plays “tricks” on him!

Doing nothing is very hard to do. You don’t know when you are finished.

Some have a photographic memory, but don’t have “same-day-service”.

It’s only when the tide goes out that you know who’s been swimming naked.

Park Wide Yard Sale

I wish I had counted the cars that came for the last Yard Sale! I worked the gate from 7 am to 9:30 am. There were several times that Harold Campbell and I had cars backed up four and five deep! I have worked the gate several times over the years, but I never had this happen before. It’s my understanding that sales were very good for most of you. Food sales were also very good. These profits go to the Activity Fund. As usual, Harriet Kahl, lot 23, would like to thank all those that helped with the food sales, as well as those directing traffic. We all thank Harriet (and Dave) for handling this event.

The Speed Limit is still 5 MPH !

I know some of you are saying, “here he goes again”. It’s only because some of you have forgotten and just need to be reminded. To those of you who consistently drive the speed limit….I “thank you” and so does the Park management. As we get older, we are supposed to become wiser. Common sense tells you why we should obey the speed limit.

A penny saved is a government oversight.

The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement..

Birds of a feather flock together and crap on your car.

Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks it was called witchcraft. Today it’s called golf.

Irene’s Cake Recipe

Following is the recipe that Irene Byykkonen used to make the cake she took for the Birthday party Sunday night:

Pistachio Bar

11/2 c. flour
11/3 stick oleo
2 T. sugar
mix and press into greased 9x13 pan. Bake 15-20 min. at 375 degrees.

Beat:
1 - 8 oz. cream cheese
2/3 c. powder sugar
½ carton of a large kool-whip
Put cream cheese over cooled crust.

Mix 2 pkg. Instant pistachio pudding and 2 ½ c. milk. Pour over cream cheese. Cover with remaining Kool-whip and nuts.

Sunday Evening Entertainment

If you missed this, you missed a good 90 minutes of music by the Pelletiers …. Freddie and Sheila.

Thoughts from Management

A BIG “thanks” to all the “Garbage Pickers” of Adopt-A-Highway who have ever helped out with this program over the last 16 years that it has been in existence. There is a sign on Bentsen Palm Drive that reads: Dedicated Service to Texas Since1992. The sign is just south of the railroad tracts on Bentsen Palm Dr.

Two families stepped up and volunteered to chair “Potluck Dinners”. They are the Boyds and the Campbells. Thank you folks. The first dinner was very well attended and food was plentiful and looked delicious!

Palapa now Wired

“Did you know???” There are now lights under the Palapa! Clear rope lighting was installed all around the top edge (inside), and four fluorescent light bulbs…the kind that screw into a regular socket. All the work was done “at no charge” by Jack Medlin and helpers …. Al, Rob, Ernie, Ray, Gary, Don. Mario did some of the digging and burying of the wiring. My guess is that the Palapa will become a popular place in the evenings when it warms up! The cost of materials was covered as a Park improvement.

Jam Session Plays under Palapa

Those "jammers" that have been playing Saturday afternoons at Medlins, moved into the Palapa this past Saturday (1-12). Extra electrical outlets were installed and enough "power" was installed to handle all the hook-ups of instruments as well as powering microphones. The crowds had been good when they played at Medlins, but there were 62 people in attendance, not counting the band members, on this Saturday afternoon. So, if you were not there you will have several chances to hear them since this is where they will be playing each Saturday, 2 - 4p.m., weather permitting..

Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented immigrant" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist".

Pancake Breakfast

The recent pancake breakfast was well attended. About 50 people showed up for breakfast. The cooks, Joe Andrews and Lee Hamilton did their usual good job and Loveta Kincaid handled the sausage and orange juice.

Super Bowl Football Pool

A football pool for the Super Bowl game is making the rounds in the Park. If you haven’t been contacted, see Al Yrjo, lot 11. Chances are $5.00. There will be a winner at the end of each quarter. So, you have four chances to win.

Stroke Scan

The stroke scan folks will be at the Rec Hall, Thursday, January 31, 9:00am to 2:00pm. If you have never had this done, you should consider it. It is a very simple process. You do not remove your clothing and they do not stick you with needles. It is like having your blood pressure taken over several parts of your body. Oh, and it is not expensive.

Don’t Forget

Check the Park Web page occasionally. New pictures are added frequently. The web page is: www.kountry-corral.com

Winter Texan TV

You will find this (on cable) on channel 35, WTTV. It is rather neat, covering all types of things and places in the Valley.

Comments you might have heard in 1955:

Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn’t surprise me if someday they will be making more than the president. The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on. And … There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $15 a night to stay in a hotel!

                  ......... ’til next time.
