Since I wrote the last Newsletter, more residents have arrived. Welcome back to those who call this “home” during the winter. To those who are new to the Park, we hope you will want to make this your winter home for years to come.
There were only four empty spots in the Park when I wrote this, which was a few days ago. Not many parks in the valley can boast about being over 95% full! The best I can tell, there are ten or eleven new families in the Park this season.
There seems to be lots of things going on in the Park! If you haven’t looked at the bulletin board lately, then I suggest you should. You might be missing something that interests you. For example, exercise classes will be offered, both in the hall as well as the pool. “Line” dancing classes for both those who want to learn, as well as a class for those who just enjoy line dancing; a movie night, which will have passed by the time you read this, but will occur again before the season is over; jam sessions each Saturday afternoon under the palapa. So, much of this is NOT on your calendar. Thus, the reason for checking the bulletin board frequently!
Much of what is going on is due in part to suggestions from Judy Luebke, our new Activity Director. But, remember…..she cannot do it all by herself. She will need your help. Plus, if you have any ideas for activities, she will always welcome them. She resides on lot 21.
Outdoor Lighting Contest
There were many nice Christmas lighting displays this year in the Park. The judges (unknown to us!) made the following choices: first place: Ron & Deb Reisinger, lot 88; second place: Ray & Verna Schwartz, lot 55; third place: Mary & I, lot 100. Congratulations, especially to the first and second place winners. Your lighting displays were outstanding!!
Rules & Regulations
It has been brought to my attention that some of you are not “playing” by the Rules set forth for the Park. There are very good reasons why these rules are made. If you can’t figure out why, then feel free to discuss them with Management. Here are a couple of rules that are being ignored:
*Cardboard boxes are to be cut up or flattened and placed beside the trash container, or put them at the end of your sidewalk on Wednesday, along with your newspapers, to be picked up.
*Utility areas are not to be used as an alleyway. It is not to be considered as a walkway to get from one side of the park to the other.
50/50 Winner
December’s 50/50 winner was Gary & Janice Bailey, Lot 112. The amount of the winner’s share was $156.00. More than “congratulations” are in order….for these fine people donated their share back to the Activity Fund! A very nice gesture on their part. Thank you very much, folks.
Christmas Dinner
Many of us enjoyed a great Christmas dinner at the Rec Hall on Christmas day. A big “thank you” to the Park for providing the turkey and ham, and to those who volunteered to cook them. Also, to the two ladies Marj Davis and Judy Luebke….for chairing the event. You did a super job, ladies. There were approximately 55 people present.
ATM Machine eats ATM card
This is a true story. I received my new ATM card about a week before we left for the Valley. I tried it out before we left and for some reason it would not work. After a bank employee couldn’t make it work, they decided it had to be replaced. Our flight to the Valley was two days away. So, they would have to mail it to me. Two weeks later I finally received it, along with a new pin number. I had written the pin number down, disguised it and put it in my billfold. Shortly after receiving the card, I headed for the bank to take some money out. I pulled up to the ATM machine, put my card in, answered a couple of questions it asked and then it asked for my pin number. I was scrambling around in my billfold trying to remember where I “hid” it. While doing this my card was still in the machine…..Now, this part is very important!!…I didn’t take it out of the ATM machine when it returned. I was still trying to find my pin number. Finally I found it, turned to the machine to enter it and my card was gone! It had “eaten” my card and was reset for the next person who came along. You have heard about getting a “lump” in your stomach over something that has happened….I had a football in mine and it was bouncing around like it had been kicked!! Why would the machine eat my card? What a dumb thing!!
The drive-up windows were directly in front of us. I walked up to one of the windows and told the girl what had happened and she informed me it had already been destroyed!! I’m sure she thought I would go away! No way!! I went into the bank and told one of the ladies what had happened. She explained the armored car would be there Friday to pick up everything in that machine and take it to the main bank in McAllen. To make a long story (which this is beginning to sound like) short, I went to the main bank and spoke with the lady who receives all the things that the ATM machine “eats” during that week. She took my driver’s license and passport and made copies, my phone number, the name of my bank back in Indiana and their phone number, and a pint of my blood…no, I’m just kidding about the blood, however if she would have asked for it, I would have gladly given it to her! Without the card I could not get to my money!! There still was no guarantee I was going to get my card back. You see, there was this lady upstairs who was the “queen” of ATM machines that “eat” cards and she has the final say!! The nice lady I told my story to said she would call me Tuesday after the armored truck had delivered the contents of that machine. She did call.
I got my card back and that nice lady got a bouquet of flowers! The moral to this story is: when playing cards with an ATM machine, don’t ponder your next move very long for you are sure to lose. Editor

Walkabout Wally
Those of you who have been residents for some time know about "Walkabout Wally". Those of you who are new to the park, talk to a neighbor that has been in the park for a few years and have them explain the story about "Wally". Bottom line is….it is just a fun thing which we have been doing for several years . If, for some reason you do not wish to have "Wally" visit your lot, please let me know and I will gladly come and get him. Please do not throw him away or destroy him. I'm on lot 100. The following residents do not wish to have "Wally" visit their lot. They are lots 8 and 23. Please respect their request.

Park Meeting
As usual, it was "Standing Room Only" for this annual meeting. The announcement that no increase in rent was anticipated at this time, brought a round of applause. Many other things were discussed. Among them were park security and what is being considered. Jack Medlin, better known as "Jack on the corner", lot ng the meeting were the owners Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Cuellar. Both spoke briefly to the Park residents.
32.….explained what he has done to secure his unit against break-ins. Very interesting and really not all that expensive to do.
Attending the meeting were the owners Mr. & Mrs. Valentine Cuellar. Both spoke briefly to the park residents.
Super Bowl Football Pool
A football pool for the Super Bowl game is making the rounds in the Park. If you haven't been contacted, see Al Yrjo, lot 11. Chances are $5.00. There will be a winner at the end of each quarter. So, you have four chances to win.
Neighborhood Watch
The Park would like to re-initiate some form of security patrol that existed in the past. The plans are for two persons to sign up for 4 hour shifts that will run from 11:00 P.M. to 3:00 A.M.
This shift could be shared between the two of you, each working two hours. If we run this as we did several years ago we will need 30 teams of 2 persons to volunteer so that nobody has to take a turn more than once a month. This worked very well in the past and hopefully we can make it work again.. The Park truck will be used as the security vehicle. It would be a great help and advantage if there is someone out there that would act as the Patrol Coordinator and be willing to instruct all those who are involved in the venture. Please let the office know if you have any suggestions and ideas of how to run this program efficiently. In light of the fact that we have had some thefts even during the season we are still open and vulnerable to crime.
Thank you for your kind consideration in this matter.
Park Management
New Years Eve at the Hall
Several residents enjoyed games and music at the hall on New Years Eve. Marj Davis chaired this event.
Black Bear or Grizzly?
A couple were vacationing in a national wildlife park. The wife expressed her concern about camping because of bears and said she would feel more comfortable in a motel. The husband said that he’d like to camp and to calm her concerns they would talk to the park ranger to see what the likelihood of a bear encounter would be. The ranger told them, “Well, we haven’t seen any grizzlies in this area so far this year or black bears, for that matter.” The wife shrieked, “There’s TWO types of bears out here? How can you tell the difference? Which one is more dangerous? The ranger replied, Well, that’s easy. If the bear chases you up a tree and it comes up after you, it’s a BLACK bear. If it SHAKES the tree until you fall out, it’s a grizzly.” The motel room was quite nice.
Black Bean Southwest Salsa
This was the salsa Irene Byykkonen brought to the New Years Eve party:
3 cans(15 oz. each)black beans rinsed well and drained. 1 ½ cups Italian or vinaigrette salad dressing. 1 jar(7oz.)diced pimentos drained. 1 cup thinly sliced green onions. 1 medium tomato chopped. 1 medium green pepper chopper. ½ cup chopped fresh parsley. 3 jalapeno peppers seeded and chopped finely. 1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce. 1 teaspoon pepper. 3 garlic cloves chopped finely. 1 teaspoon dried oregano. 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Combine all in a large bowl, mix well, cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours to blend flavors. Serve with tortilla chips. Yields 9 cups
